Our Training Partner: CHET Academy

Through our partnership with Commercial Heavy Equipment Training  (CHET) Academy, participants gain access to professional training environments designed to meet Ontario’s commercial driver training standards.

Classroom Instruction

Participants begin with structured, in-class learning delivered by CHET Academy. This phase focuses on the fundamentals of commercial driving, safety regulations, and Ministry of Transportation requirements, building a strong knowledge base before entering practical training.

Truck Simulator Training

Participants gain hands-on experience using advanced truck driving simulators that replicate real-world driving scenarios. Simulator training helps students build confidence, practice critical skills, and prepare for on-road situations in a controlled learning environment.

Behind-the-Wheel Training

Participants progress to practical, behind-the-wheel training with experienced instructors. This stage focuses on real driving conditions, vehicle control, and safety awareness, ensuring participants are prepared for licensing requirements and long-term success in the trucking industry.

Requirements

AZ Licence & Training Overview

What an AZ Licence Allows You to Do

An AZ licence qualifies drivers to operate tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles where the combined gross weight of the vehicle and trailer exceeds 4,600 kilograms. AZ licence holders may also operate straight trucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, and large commercial vans.

With the appropriate additional endorsements, AZ drivers may also qualify to operate passenger vehicles such as buses and large passenger vans.

What Is Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT)?

Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is a provincial requirement introduced by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation to ensure all new Class A drivers meet standardized training requirements before attempting their road test.

All new drivers pursuing a Class A licence must successfully complete an approved MELT program prior to testing. This requirement exists to improve safety, consistency, and professionalism across Ontario’s commercial trucking industry.

Our Training Partner

Highway to Hope partners with CHET Academy, an approved Ontario truck driving school that delivers training aligned with the Ministry of Transportation’s Commercial Truck Driver Training Standards.

Through this partnership, participants receive structured, professional instruction designed to prepare them for licensing requirements and long-term success in the trucking industry.

Tractor-Trailer Training Overview

The tractor-trailer training program includes both classroom instruction and practical, behind-the-wheel experience. Training is delivered over several weeks and covers all mandatory learning objectives required by Ontario’s Class A commercial driver standards.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to the commercial trucking industry
  • Vehicle components and systems
  • Safe driving techniques and professional habits
  • Off-road manoeuvres and yard training
  • Vehicle inspections and compliance requirements
  • Hours of service and regulatory standards
  • Cargo securement and emergency handling

Participants receive hands-on instruction in the yard and on the road using a tractor-trailer, supported by classroom learning to reinforce technical knowledge and safety practices.

Individualized Instruction

Training includes focused, one-on-one instruction with experienced trainers. This allows participants to progress at a pace that supports their individual learning needs while building confidence behind the wheel.

*Training is delivered by CHET Academy as Highway to Hope’s official training partner.
